TRUE LOVE WAITS

by LifeWay Student Ministry

What is True Love Waits?
Created in April, 1993, and sponsored by LifeWay Christian Resources‚ the world's largest provider of religious products and services‚ True Love Waits is an international campaign that challenges teenagers and college students to remain sexually abstinent until marriage. To date, over a million young people have signed covenant cards stating…

How has the campaign been carried out?

From the beginning True Love Waits has been a grass-roots effort that originated with, and has since been led by, young people. Youth leaders have carried the True Love Waits message to young people through churches, student organizations, health-care groups, and on campuses across the nation. Numerous national, city-wide, and regional rallies have been held each year. Southern Baptists made the chastity campaign an ongoing annual emphasis by listing February as True Love Waits Month on their denominational calendar. Other denominations and religious groups have developed their own plans for participating in the campaign, many using the Southern Baptist plan as a model.

How big is True Love Waits?
More than 210,000 covenant cards were displayed on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on July 29, 1994, as part of the first True Love Waits National Celebration. Approximately 25,000 young people attending DC '94 participated in the event. A second event, True Love Waits Thru the Roof, occurred February 11, 1996, in Atlanta, Georgia, as part of the national youth ministers' meeting Atlanta '96. This international display included 340,000 cards stacked from the floor to the roof of the Georgia Dome‚ and beyond. Over 18,000 youth and youth leaders attended.

The True Love Waits Goes Campus phase was launched Valentine's Day 1997. As part of True Love Waits Goes Campus 1998, a campaign report that included an additional 68,000 commitments was presented to state and national government leaders.

Students continue to take the abstinence challenge to secondary schools and college campuses across America each February. On October 2, 1999, 1,500 youth carried 100,000 commitment cards across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. Cards were then mailed to Australia for a display December 31-January 1, 2000 as a symbol of crossing into the new millennium with commitments to purity. On June 13, 2000, 450 True Love Waits yard signs were displayed at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. This was the site of the first display of True Love Waits commitment cards. In the summer of 2004, youth from 20 countries sent 460,000 commitment cards to Athens, Greece, to be displayed during the Summer Olympics.

Is True Love Waits just about refraining from intercourse? What about other practices such as oral sex?
True Love Waits is about following God's plan for purity. He calls us to be pure and holy. Sexual purity includes refraining from sex outside of marriage, but that is not all. True Love Waits is a comprehensive call to sexual purity that involves the mind, the spirit, and behavior.

Facebook Pages vs. Groups

Two ways to keep your church connected

Facebook Pages vs. Groups

So you want to get your church into the Facebook social media world? But, alas, some well-meaning individual in the church has already created a Facebook page on behalf of the church.

Sigh. This can be really frustrating, when multiple Facebook Pages and Groups exist for one church. Plus, they may or may not accurately represent what the organization is about.

You can attempt to find out who “owns” a Page or Group and contact them directly. Problem solved. Right?

But wait…what’s the difference between a Facebook Page and a Group? Which one is right for your church? I am so glad you asked! Here is a quick rundown of the difference (from Facebook's perspective) between Pages and Groups.

(DOUBLE CLICK THE PICTURE BELOW TO SEE THE FULL IMAGE)

So, which one should I create?

Depending on your needs, you can create a Page or select "Create Group" on the left side of your home page. We suggest, especially for whole church communication, to create a Page. If you just want to be in touch with a few select people (like a ministry team or council), a Group might be best for you.

And remember that well-meaning person from your church who created that rogue Facebook presence to start with? Don’t rule them out—they could be your next superstar volunteer!

5 Traits of True Christian Friends

So, what does a true Christian friendship look like? Let's break it down into traits that are easy to identify.

1. Christian Friends Love Sacrificially

John 15:13
Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.
(NIV)

Jesus is the finest example of a true Christian friend. His love for us is sacrificial, never selfish. He demonstrated it not only through his miracles of healing, but more fully through the humble service of washing the disciples' feet, and then ultimately, when he laid down his life on the cross.

If we choose our friends based only on what they have to offer, we'll rarely discover the blessings of a genuine friendship. Philippians 2:3 says, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves." By valuing your friend's needs above your own, you'll be on your way to loving like Jesus. In the process, you'll likely gain a true friend.

2. Christian Friends Accept Unconditionally

Proverbs 17:17
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
(NIV)

We discover the best of friendships with brothers and sisters who know and accept our weaknesses and imperfections.

If we're easily offended or hold on to bitterness, we'll have a hard time making friends. No one is perfect. We all make mistakes now and then. If we take a truthful look at ourselves, we'll admit that we bear some of the blame when things go wrong in a friendship. A good friend is quick to ask forgiveness and ready to be forgiving.

3. Christian Friends Trust Completely

Proverbs 18:24
A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

This proverb reveals that a true Christian friend is trustworthy, indeed, but emphasizes a second important truth as well. We should only expect to share complete trust with a few loyal friends. Trusting too easily can lead to ruin, so be careful about putting your confidence in a mere companion. Over time our true Christian friends will prove their trustworthiness by sticking closer than a brother or sister.

4. Christian Friends Keep Healthy Boundaries

1 Corinthians 13:4
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy ...
(NIV)

If you feel smothered in a friendship, something is wrong. Likewise, if you feel used or abused, something is amiss. Recognizing what's best for someone and giving that person space are signs of a healthy relationship. We should never let a friend come between us and our spouse. A true Christian friend will wisely avoid intruding and recognize your need to maintain other relationships.

5. Christian Friends Give Mutual Edification

Proverbs 27:6
Wounds from a friend can be trusted ...
(NIV)

True Christian friends will build each other up emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Friends like to be together simply because it feels good. We receive strength, encouragement, and love. We talk, we cry, we listen. But at times we also have to say the difficult things our dearest friend needs to hear. Yet, because of the shared trust and acceptance, we are the one person who can impact our friend's heart, for we know how to deliver the hard message with truth and grace. I believe this is what Proverbs 27:17 means when it says, "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another."

My hope is that these five traits will show you areas that may need a little work in your effort to build stronger friendships. But if you don't have lots of close friends, don't be too hard on yourself. Remember, true Christian friendships are rare treasures. They take time to nurture, but in the process we grow more Christlike.

Loathing Professor-The Urban Legend of the FAITH

Those chain emails... they clog our inboxes, they wake us up with a laugh, they can even offer an inspiring thought or story. One of these often-forwarded emails provides a good launching pad for thinking about and addressing a certain important issue in the young Christian community.

If you are high school- or college-aged, or are the parent or teacher of a student of that age, you've probably seen the legendary one about the atheistic university professor of philosophy who claims that, if God exists, He will prevent the chalk the professor inevitably drops from breaking. This is his perfunctory antic on the first day of classes each semester, until, the story goes, one fateful day a young man of strong faith stands up and claims that God does indeed exist. While the professor’s response is different in each variation of the story, the general offensiveness and lack of professionalism are always the same. While he rants, he proceeds to drop the chalk, which slips out of his fingers, rolls down his torso, off the pleats of his pants, and finally his shoe, unharmed. The professor is struck dumb, and there is much rejoicing.

While this folk tale claims to be a victory for Christ, I wish to examine its effects more deeply. How does this story, among others of similar sentiment circulated throughout Christian cyberspace, guide our minds to think about the secular university setting? Could it be at all responsible for the limitation of some Christian students?

While the increasingly muddy details of this story lend doubts to its actual accuracy, I can't accurately count the number of times I have received the email, or the times this story was brought up in conversation with the introduction of the topic of my own post-high school plans. These stories, a sort of Grimm’s for Christian students, fill young, ambitious Christians with trepidation at leaving their tightly-knit communities and entering certain secular universities where they might instead grow and learn and influence.

Are we too hasty in our judgment, categorization, and caution of secular institutions? When I first entered the public university atmosphere to take a few courses during my senior year of high school, I expected a professor to challenge my God with a piece of chalk. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised by the professionalism of all of my instructors. By the end of each semester, I could not tell what a specific professor’s religious convictions were. If they were Christian or atheist, such views remained outside of the classroom, and only the material at hand remained. This left me free to ponder the course material via a Christian worldview if I so wished, on my own time. Students of other religious backgrounds in those classes were not under- or misrepresented, and neither was I, as a Christian student. Now that I have entered a four-year university full-time, I can only speak more to the professionalism and respect for students which professors demonstrate on a daily basis.

Now, if education is not one’s focus, that is another matter. A competitive collegiate atmosphere may not suit everyone. However, if a student feels that he or she is gifted and called to a career in which a higher caliber of education is necessary, this social pressure of fear can influence this already incredibly difficult decision.

From a young age I have wanted to be a teacher. As I reached high school, I realized that not only did I want to teach, but that I loved school. I loved studying, I loved the classroom environment (a rare treat, as I was homeschooled for most of primary education), and loved burying myself in study. However, my scholastic intentions met with judgment and skepticism from my church at the time, and also from the parents of Christian friends. I was repeatedly told that I needed to guard closely my beliefs, or they would be snatched away from me, as if from beneath my nose. Others warned me not to go near what seemed to be a proverbial lions’ den of alternative theories and belief systems. One need not wonder at my terror and confusion stemming from contemplating the issue.

Christians who espouse these ideas and propagate the myths fail to acknowledge the long list of features about secular institutions that may in fact benefit a student, rather than irrevocably harm them. See, most Christian institutions are private and therefore expensive options for those of average income. Publically funded institutions often minimize the tuition bill significantly. I'm enjoying an education from a ranked university at a fraction of the cost. Larger, public universities also have nearly unlimited resources and opportunities for every student’s interest and involvement, not to mention religious social clubs (my own university seems to have one for nearly every denomination of Christianity, as well as every other religion represented in the student body). Finally, education at a secular university might be ideal for those feeling called to a life of ministry. To widen the perspective and social experience only benefits a student leaning toward a life in the mission field or ministry in church planting or outreach into the community.

In the light of faith, secular universities can start to appear even beneficial to the personal faith, career goals, and desire to remain debt-free of a Christian student. Away from her parents and her home community, a student is free to take ownership of her own faith, and discover why she believes what she believes. Instead of having to go to church because the whole family is going, the student can seek out his own spiritual environment: discovering what he likes and what he dislikes in a church setting.

College in general is a coming-of-age experience necessary for development into adulthood and maturity in the faith. This can be a frightening thought to some parents, but if the student is well prepared theologically and apologetically to head into a secular environment, then only the best can come from independence and ownership.

So as move-in day approaches, dispel the gloom and trepidation of leaving home, and banish the voice of that chain mail. Replace it with the excitement of looking forward to independence, widening opportunities, and strengthening faith.

Dear God, Thank You for friends.

Thank you talaga sa inyo Guys.. i truly appreciate your effort and time..

Ecclesiastes 4:9–12
Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.
